Education

The proportion of the population below age 15 in Turkey is one of the highest among OECD countries. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that these young people complete their education and are well prepared for the labor force and further learning. Yet, they remain below the OECD average in reading, mathematics and science, particularly amongst disadvantaged students from low socio-economic backgrounds.Participation rates in early childhood education and care are also low compared to the OECD average. There are various priorities that need to be addressed simultaneously, including improving equity between regions and urban and rural areas; addressing the needs of disadvantaged students; preparing quality teachers and school leaders; improving access to and completion of secondary education, and higher education; and adequately funding the education system. TPF targets both equity and equality in education with the projects it supports.

An Apple for the Teacher

Training Turkey's teachers' is an integral part of improving the quality of education in Turkey. According to 2008-2012 data, the number of illiterate citizens decreased to 2.8 million from 4.9 million. It is estimated that a large reasoning for this drop in illiteracy was due to the improved relationship between teachers and students, a result of training modern teaching methodology.

Our partners on the ground are training teachers to provide the highest quality of education to young, thriving students as well as training principals to equip them with the leadership skills they need to efficiently and effectively manage a school.

Scholarships

A need for Necessary to earn income is a large part ofthe main reason for high drop-out rates high-school students. the why a majority of high school aged students are not in school. Providing students with scholarships, to and supplementing their family's monthly salary increases the likelihood that they will attend school. Turkey still has the highest proportion of young people neither employed nor in education or training [NEET] among 15-29 year-olds across OECD countries: 35 percent compared with an OECD average of 16 percent. TPF hopes that through a small amount of funding, believs that scholarships will enable students will to feel financially secure enough to attend school.

Building and Improving Schools

Providing a safe, secure learning environment is vital to achieving our educational goals. When schools don't have enough books, are missing toilets, need elevators for disabled or are reaching their capacity, they need funding to help improve their environment. That's where TPF steps in. Turkish Philanthropy Funds' partners help repair schools, build new classrooms, provide additional school supplies and update their technology.
