University educated young women in Turkey, by virtue of their proven educational accomplishments, motivation and general sophistication can be considered "high impact", namely they are in a favorable situation to make lasting economic and social contributions to Turkish society. Despite their potential, however, many do not continue into the labor force or in leadership positions in their communities once they are married. Many of these young women are the first in their families and communities to go to college adn therefore do not have the support networks and skills necessary to continue in such roles.
|Impact of the Organization|
Due to the opening of many new public universities, these women represent a significantly large population whose needs are not being met and that is grossly underutilized. DLD's mission is the advancement of Turkey's growth and prosperity by strengthening the contributions of its girls and women. It offers programs and services to promote leadership, educational opportunities, economic independence and civic engagement among Turkish girls and women. DLD's signature program, the nine-month long Sparks program targets university women from modest backgrounds. The goal of the Sparks program is to help prepare young women to be active, responsible and productive members of Turkish society through a unique hands-on learning model which emphasizes personal growth and community engagement. DLD also provides scholarships to a small number of select university women.
